The thing about Trace is she has a brain for organisation. We make a good team when we’re not rubbing each other up the wrong way. I have considered, many times, how life might have turned out differently if I started my wedding planner business with her and not my husband.

If we had to team up and do a murder, Trace and I would definitely be more efficient at it than Donovan and his aggro dad.

Another thing about Trace is when she gets a bee in her bonnet about something, there’s no stopping her.

So, I shouldn’t have been surprised when I got up early the next morning and found several whiteboards propped up around Aunt Harriet’s kitchen, detailing much of what had happened to me over the last few days, across several tidy lists.

“What is this?” I said blankly. “And also, good morning?”

“Okay,” said Trace, popping up from behind the cupboards with a bowl of cereal and a handful of washable markers. “Suspects list. Do you think I’ve missed anyone out?”

I looked at the suspect list. “Where you say high school bitch, I presume you mean Jeena Harding-Brady?”

“Jeena! I knew it had a J in it.” She made her correction.

“And I don’t know who Sparkle Pony is.” I paused, thinking about it. “Do you mean Harper Park?”

“Got it.” More writing.

“You remembered Leon’s name, I see.”

“It’s a nice name, it was on our boys’ list when Daisy was born.”

“Trace. What are you doing?” I looked more closely. “Why am I on the suspect list?”

She pointed her marker at me. “You found the body, Sam. It’s suspicious.”

I knew she was joking, but the very thought of being suspected was kind of traumatising. “I notice you’re not on the list!”

“I ran out of room. And also, I know I didn’t do it.” Trace surveyed her handiwork with pride. “I borrowed these whiteboards from work, they were having a chuck out. We are going to solve this.”

“Why would we do that? It’s a job for the police.” Normal people trust the police to handle murder inquiries. Normal people assume that police don’t arrest people without a very good reason.

Trace made a scoffing sound. “The police. They probably think you did it.”

“That is not helpful or comforting,” I snapped back, even if it did reflect my deepest fears about this whole scenario.

Trace gave me a mildly sympathetic look, and wrote a question mark next to my name on the suspect list. “You’re a red herring.”

“Good to know.”

“Tell me more about Meegan. She doesn’t give a lot of personal detail away on her Instagram.”

“I don’t know much.”

“Husband, boyfriend? Murder is almost always the husband or the boyfriend. Which is a depressing fact to learn at 8am on a Sunday, but I’ve been doing a lot of internet research while feeling cynical about my failed marriage.”

“The only relationship I sort of know about is E.J. Ethan Brady. And no one’s actually confirmed they were together. Jeena thought they were. I think Donovan thought that too.” I paused. “Yeah no, pretty sure Leon confirmed it.
